G5mini gauge overview

The G5mini gauge is an inclinometer designed to measure changes in an inclination or a tilt. This gauge is based on the same principles as the standard G5, but it is half the size, which however halves the resolution: 0.06 degrees vs 0.03 degrees for the G5 inclinometer.

G5mini dimensions: 170 mm x 70 mm x 18 mm
G5 dimensions: 270 mm x 100 mm x 20 mm

Comparison of the G5mini and G5 inclinometers

The G5mini gauge is transparent so that it is discreet. It is supplied in its protective case with a spirit level. A screw locks the needle to protect the device during transport. Readings are taken with a vernier to 0.1 mm.

Fixing the G5mini inclinometer

The G5mini gauge can be fixed in two ways:

Fixing the G5mini inclinometerG5mini inclinometer fixed flat

Mechanical fixing to the surface using the screws supplied, through 2 slotted holes.

These slotted holes (6 x 25 mm), whose main axes are perpendicular to each other, are located on the vertical axis of the gauge, at the top and at the bottom. For each hole, the fixings consist of a headless screw with a brass anchor, 2 nuts and 2 EPDM washers.

This fixing method allows the inclination of the gauge to be adjusted with the spirit level supplied. It also prevents contact with the surface if the surface is damaged / damp, and thus ensures the durability of the gauge.

G5mini inclinometer fixed perpendicularlyG5mini inclinometer fixed perpendicularly

Mechanical fixing perpendicular to the surface with 2 brackets (sold separately): for example, to measure changes in the tilt of a retaining wall when the G5mini gauge cannot be fixed to the “edge” of the wall.

Reading the G5mini inclinometer

Stand directly in front of the needle, with your eyes level with the dial, to avoid any parallax error. To make sure you are exactly in front of it, you should not be able to see the sides of the needle.

Reading the G5mini inclinometer

Read according to the vernier principle:

  • The lower scale is graduated in mm from 0 to 50 mm: this is the measuring scale.
  • The upper scale, on the pendulum needle with the T, is movable: this is the vernier, reading to 0.1 mm (10 vernier divisions correspond to 9 mm on the measuring scale)
  1. Reading the millimetres

The T mark of the vernier lies between two graduations of the measuring scale. Example: between 22 and 23. The number of mm corresponds to the graduation to the left of the vernier T mark: 22 mm in the example.

  2. Reading the decimal

Look for the vernier line that coincides with a line on the measuring scale. In the example, vernier graduation 6 coincides with graduation 28 on the measuring scale. In other words, the decimal reading is 0.6 mm.

  3. The reading in the example photo is therefore 22.6 mm

The difference between two consecutive readings, MULTIPLIED by 10, gives the change in mm per metre of height.

So, change in inclination or tilt at the top = Absolute value (M2 – M1) x 10 x H

Example:

Balcony length = 1.5 m

  • Reading 1 = 22.1 mm taken on 21/02
  • Reading 2 = 21.9 mm taken on 03/05
  • Change in tilt at the end of the balcony = (22.1 – 21.9) x 10 x 1.5 = 3 mm

Download the Saugnac.app application to track your readings

The Saugnac web application, completely free and unlimited, is available on PC or smartphone at https://saugnac.app. It lets you:

  • identify each G5mini gauge and its readings with its unique QR code
  • save readings in your account
  • calculate the change in inclination
  • retrieve the temperature and humidity via geolocation
  • collaborate with several users on the same gauge
  • manage alert thresholds
  • sort gauges by site and locate them on a map
  • download data in Excel format
  • display graphs automatically
  • share data with other people without an account
  • access the application from your PC or smartphone
